The auto industry may be a mess right now but that isn’t stopping the 2009 F-150 from taking home some pretty significant awards. Kelly Blue Book has decided that the 2009 F-150 is the best redesigned vehicle of 2009. The F-150 has taken other awards recently from Texas Auto Writers Association, PickupTrucks.com and Popular Mechanics. These awards show a dedicated Ford to reshaping it’s North American cars and trucks and restoring faith back into their brand.

Editors at Kelley Blue Book today announced that Ford’s all new 2009 F-150 – an American icon with class-leading capability and unsurpassed fuel economy – has earned the title of “2009 Best Redesigned Vehicle.”

“I just really like this truck,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. “I think it’s the sheer power of it that’s so impressive. It’s such an important truck in the market; it’s so important to Ford and to the domestic auto industry in general. There are so many variations, and so many innovations. In some ways, the F-150 is more than a truck – it’s a work system.”

The all-new 2009 F-150, new inside and out, is the new benchmark in the full-size pickup segment.

Improvements include a new high-strength, lighter-weight chassis that allows this tough truck to deliver even more horsepower, unsurpassed fuel economy and class-leading towing and payload capacity.

Nerad noted the array of available technology – from the industry-exclusive SYNC to Ford Work Solutions. SYNC provides hands-free, in-car communication. Ford Work Solutions is an innovative suite of options including an in-dash computer with Internet access, Tool Link to track tools, Crew Chief technology to dispatch workers and reduce vehicle operating costs and Cable Lock to improve security. He also singled out the added conveniences of the Box Side Step and Tailgate Step that helps customers easily gain access to the truck’s pickup box.

“There really is something there for everybody,” Nerad said. “There are so many interior and exterior design changes on this truck, and all of them are stellar.”

The F-150, he said, was chosen after the editors looked at all the redesigned vehicles on the market – cars, CUVs, SUVs and trucks – and winnowed the selections down to a top 10.

The accolade is gratifying, said chief engineer Matt O’Leary, not only for the prestige it carries, but because it also offers an indication of how Ford’s continual interaction with its unparalleled customer base brings results.

“When we set out to redesign the F-150, we said we would leave no stone unturned to ensure that our 31-year leadership on full-size trucks continued for many more years,” O’Leary said. “This recognition is just another indication that our success is founded on listening to the customer better than anyone else and finding innovative solutions to their concerns. That’s not something we take lightly – we live it every day.”

Ford has announced that it will be adding 1,000 workers to it’s Dearborn F-150 Plant in January predicting that truck sales will increase enough to warrant the new jobs.
Ford will market the 2009 Ford F-150 directly to work buyers claiming that the market is all but gone for those who buy trucks but never haul or tow anything.

America’s best-selling pickups for 31 consecutive years are also the most accessorized vehicles in the aftermarket, and this year’s Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show brings new options aplenty for the 2009 Ford F-150.

Four F-150 project trucks – running the gamut from a rolling work shop to a functional fun machine – debut at the SEMA show in Las Vegas, which runs Nov. 4-7.

The F-150 Heavy Duty DEWALT Contractor Concept was designed to be the “ultimate contractor’s truck,” according to Jennifer Ervin, director of Business Development for DEWALT.

“At DEWALT, we are obsessed with developing innovative solutions for the professional contractor that will deliver productivity on the job site,” she said. “We have thoroughly thought through how a contractor uses his or her truck on the job, and we’ve worked hard to integrate every application into the truck.”

The DEWALT Contractor includes features such as a built-in charger for battery-powered tools that is hidden in the center console, a customized storage area beneath the second-row seat and Ford Works Solutions™ Tool Link™ from DEWALT.

“Tool Link will enable contractors to know if they have the right tools for the job in the truck when they leave in the morning, and it also helps prevent loss of tools at the end of the day,” said Ervin.

Mike Duval, owner of X’Treme Toyz, had something else in mind for the F-150 he dubbed “Fahrenheit F-150°.”

“I ride motorcycles, mountain bikes and four wheelers, and I like to go camping,” he said. “I wanted to transform the truck into a functional, fun vehicle for outdoorsmen like myself.”

In addition to “hot flame” exterior graphics, the Fahrenheit F-150° includes features including a 9,000 lb. winch hidden behind the license plate at the front and rear of the truck; a bike rack across the top rail; and a Bedslide sliding cargo drawer equipped with a toolbox, tire and small compressor.

“You can basically put all of your toys in the truck, hook up the trailer and go,” said Duval. “And with the winch on both ends of the truck, you can get pulled in either direction if you get stuck.”

Duval says he usually “goes crazy” with the interiors of his show cars, but he didn’t see a reason to tamper with the interior of the 2009 F-150.

“I didn’t do a whole lot to the interior because the factory did such a fantastic job with the vehicle right out of the gate,” he said. “It’s got a great stereo system, Ford SYNC™ and a variety of other creature comforts.”

In addition to a well-appointed interior, the 2009 F-150 offers customizers like Duval a variety of different options straight from the factory to build upon. The vehicle is available with three cab styles, four box options and seven unique trim levels — a total of 35 different configurations in all.

Ford Designer Melvin Betancourt says he believes the F-150 is so popular in the aftermarket because in addition to all the “built-in” options available on the vehicle, there are still countless ways for customization enthusiasts to change it up.

“Whether it’s adding big tires for off-roading or lowering the truck to give it more of a street performance look, the F-150 is like a blank canvas that you can do almost anything with,” said Betancourt. “It all depends on the personality of the owner.”

The 2009 Ford F-150s featured at this year’s SEMA show include:

2009 Ford F-150 Heavy Duty DEWALT Contractor
When there is a job to do, Ford F-Series trucks are the leading choice for the men and women who need to get it done. The 2009 Ford F-150 continues this work truck leadership with even more capability and smart pickup features than ever before.

The Heavy Duty DEWALT Contractor turns the 2009 F-150 into the ultimate tough truck for any job site with features that will drive productivity and help contractors achieve their peak performance. This rugged, durable, hard-working truck is equipped with powertrain mods to improve performance and efficiency plus a long list of custom features that turn it into a rolling work shop. To ensure that they have the right tool at their fingertips for any job, contractors can effectively store and manage their tool inventory through Tool Link and Customized On Board Storage.

2009 Ford F-150 FX-4 by X-Treme Toyz
The 2009 Ford F-150 FX-4 is “Built Ford Tough” for hard work or for rough play. Starting with this extremely capable pickup X-Treme Toyz turns up the heat with its “Fahrenheit F-150.”

This highly functional fun machine is totally tricked out for the active outdoor lifestyle enthusiast. With a radically rugged-looking exterior, a luxuriously refined interior plus a full array of functional upgrades and accessories, this truck will put true weekend warriors in the zone. It lets them play rough all day, hose off the mud, then hit the nightspots in style.

2009 Ford F-150 by Street Scene Equipment
The new Ford F-150 Lariat is built for those who don’t believe in compromises. It combines “Built Ford Tough” performance and capability with a surprising level of comfort and luxury.

Drawing on years of experience and success in the sport truck market, Street Scene Equipment has taken the no-compromise attitude of the 2009 F-150 Lariat Supercrew to the next level. The result is the perfect combination of head-turning style and tough performance with the level of comfort now expected by today’s demanding truck owners. Whether it’s putting in a hard day at work, towing a large boat to the lake for a weekend of family fun or a taking friends to a black tie event, the Ford F-150 by Street Scene will get you noticed and get you there in comfort and luxury.

Hi-Pa Drive F-150
What’s been taken out of this Ford F-150 hinges on what’s been put in. The engine, drive train, gear box and all the related parts have been replaced it with the game-changing Hi-Pa Drive™ system. The four electric in-wheel motors that power the fully-electric Hi-Pa Drive F-150 will deliver more than 600 horsepower as well as more torque than the 320 horsepower V-8 engine it replaced. Hi-Pa Drive is helping car designers eliminate oil dependency, carbon emissions and costs, while adding more power, room, performance and design options.

Ford Motor Company employees at Kansas City Assembly Plant today celebrated the production of the new 2009 Ford F-150, which offers the most capability in the full-size pickup market with unsurpassed fuel economy.

“Ford is the truck leader and core F-150 truck buyers expect and demand the best truck on the market,” said Ford Motor Company Group Vice President of Global Manufacturing and Labor Affairs Joe Hinrichs, who thanked plant employees for a successful launch of the new
F-150. “Ford’s quality is on par with the best in the industry and the team at Kansas City Assembly Plant is delivering a truck that is ‘Built Ford Tough’ with an unrelenting focus on quality and craftsmanship.”

On sale later this month, the new F-150 offers fuel economy that has improved an average of
8 percent across the entire lineup as a result of a wide-range of engineering enhancements. The fuel economy gains reach as high as 12 percent versus the prior model year on F-150 models equipped with the high-volume 3-valve, 5.4-liter V-8 engine. At the same time, the new F-150 delivers class-leading towing capability of 11,300 pounds and hauling capacity of 3,030 pounds – a combination no other competitor can match.

The new F-150, part Ford’s F-Series lineup that remains the best selling vehicle on the market, also offers more standard safety equipment than any other half-ton pickup on the market, with comparable or better pricing at all three cab configurations versus the competition. The F-150 Lariat SuperCrew, for example, starts at $35,820*, more than $5,000 less than a comparably equipped 2009 Dodge Ram.

Ford invested $110 million in Kansas City Assembly Plant for new tooling and equipment to build the new F-150, which offers consumers the most cab styles, box options and trim levels.

Upgrades include the addition of 24 new clearcoat robots for flexible automation in the paint shop. In final assembly, the box line was extended to support installation of the F-150 cargo management system and the tailgate step. The plant also added 65 new error-proofing devices to ensure quality is built into every new F-150.

In the body shop, state-of-the-art, precision lasers were installed to mate the roof and body-side panels to the truck’s new roof structure, which features the industry’s first use of super high-strength, dual-phase steel. The stiffer, tighter structure contributes to improved safety and delivers a quieter more refined ride.

These measures, along with other design changes are key to delivering Ford’s most capable
F-150 ever. Even before production of the 2009 F-150 began, prototypes of the new truck endured 4.5 million miles of real-world and laboratory testing and quality checks where genuine truck customers use their pickups.

And while the truck was undergoing tough testing, Kansas City employees were focused on ways to build in quality into each new F-150.

“The team at Kansas City Assembly Plant understands the importance of the F-150 to Ford,” said Ken Ward, plant manager, Kansas City Assembly Plant. “They are proud to build Ford’s most capable F-150 ever.”

Ford has officially announced two new special edition Ford Super Duty Trucks for 2009, the Cabela FX4 and the Harley-Davidson F-450.

Cabela’s FX4
Ford is expanding its relationship with Cabela’s, the world’s largest outdoor outfitter, by offering a new Cabela’s FX4 package for 2009.

According to customer data, 76 percent of F-Series buyers hunt and fish. With F-Series serving as the official truck of Cabela’s for the past 7 years - and trucks prominently placed at stores nationwide and featured in Cabela’s publications and TV programming - there’s no more authentic way to connect with customers.

The Cabela’s FX4 package for 2009 features a unique two-tone paint scheme in five colors: Ebony, Oxford White, Forest Green Metallic, Royal Red Metallic and Silver Metallic.

Each is contrasted with Sterling Grey Metallic lower body accents, running boards and wheel lip moldings, finished off with custom mud flaps and unique Cabela’s badging.

The interior features standard cloth seats with the Cabela’s logo or available aniline leather seats with a unique two-tone embossed grain pattern. The center stack is finished with a dark Paldeo wood appliqué. All-weather floor mats also wear the Cabela’s logo. And for the avid outdoor enthusiast, additional lockable storage in the front console and underneath the rear seats is perfect for keeping equipment secure and out of sight.

Harley-Davidson F-450
Ford and Harley-Davidson team up again for a new Harley-Davidso F-450, the “Big Hog Daddy” of the road.

As with the still available F-250/350 SRW models, each individually numbered Harley-Davidson F-450 features a unique blue-flame paint scheme that starts at the side vents and runs down to the box side of the truck. The flame design scheme is carried through to the interior gauges in the instrument panel.

The custom-perforated black leather-wrapped seats, door panels and center console cover reveal blue leather underneath giving the same blue-flame effect as the exterior. Harley-Davidson badges are visible on the fenders and tailgate, along with “Harley-Davidson” script located on the box side.

Those who wanted to see a smaller version of the F-150 are going to be disappointed to hear that Ford has decided that the F-100 is not the answer to high gas prices. Instead, they will be putting their focus on increasing the efficiency of their current engines by using their highly touted EcoBoost platform and investing into a new technology called ‘ethanol boosting’ which injects a small amount of the biofuel into the engine to increase fuel economy even further.

The F-100 become less likely at the announcement that the Ford Ranger would continue production for at least a few more years.

Ford is set to offer more buyouts to it’s workers, this time at it’s Dearborn Truck Plant as it tries to stay afloat, battling high gas prices and stiff competition from Foreign Automakers. The buyout is set to be offered to employees by next week. Workers will have a 90-day window to make up their mind, with a deadline of Oct. 31. That is longer than the normal 30-day window workers have had in the recent past.

Ford already has slashed about 40,000 hourly jobs and 12,000 salaried jobs since 2005 through a variety of voluntary buyout offers and involuntary job actions.

Ford has been left with more than 190,000 F-Series trucks in inventory at the end of last month.

A 4 cylinder F-150 has been mentioned as a possible addition to the F Series lineup as soon as 2013, according to sources at Ford. The four-cylinder would be powered by Ford’s EcoBoost technology and answer consumer demand for more gas friendly vehicles as gas prices continue to spiral out of control. Ford is hoping to produce up to 500,000 vehicles that take advantage of EcoBoost by 2012 giving them plenty of time to produce a capable engine for the 2013 Ford F-150.

Ford EcoBoost engines use high-pressure direct gas injection and turbocharging to get better performance and up to 20 percent better fuel economy compared to larger displacement engines. V-6 engines are said to perform like V-8s, and four-cylinder engines are said to perform as if they had six cylinders.

In an appearance before the Motor Press Guild, Dan Kapp, Ford’s director of powertrain research and advanced engineering, told journalists that “in probably the most extreme cases (using EcoBoost engines), we’re going to be downsizing on the order of 40, 50 percent. That would take, for example, a three-liter V6 down to a two-liter 4-cylinder engine. A 2.5-liter 4-cylinder could be something on the order of 1.5-liters.”

Kapp also said, “With these factors (smaller displacement and turbocharging) in the equation, an EcoBoost 6-cylinder engine can produce like an 8-cylinder and a 4-cylinder engine like a 6.”

No other information such as displacement of the engine is available at this time.

The Boss Engine has been axed for future use in the Ford F-150 but the Super Duty will still be getting the engine as gas prices bypass the $4 gallon mark and the Super Duties current V-10 is less than stellar in the gas mileage department. The 6.2 ‘Boss’ Engine was also rumored to appear in a special edition Boss Mustang but that too has been axed, though some say it was never on the table to begin with.
